Understanding Sentence Structure in German: A Beginner’s Guide
🧩 1. Basic Word Order (SVO)
Like English, the most basic sentence structure in German follows this pattern:
Subject – Verb – Object (SVO)
🔁 2. Verb in Second Position (V2 Rule)
In statements, the main verb is always in the second position—no matter what comes first.
📌 Examples:
Ich spiele Fußball. (I play soccer.)
Morgen spiele ich Fußball. (Tomorrow, I play soccer.)
👉 Notice how the verb stays in second place, even when the sentence starts with something other than the subject.
❗ 3. Yes/No Questions (Verb First)
In yes/no questions, the verb comes first.
❓ 4. W-Questions (Question Word + Verb + Subject)
When using question words (wie, was, wo, wann...), the structure is:
Question Word + Verb + Subject
📌 Example:
Was machst du? (What are you doing?)
🧱 5. Subordinate Clauses (Verb at the End)
In subordinate clauses (introduced by words like weil, dass, wenn), the verb goes to the end.
📌 Example:
Ich lerne Deutsch, weil ich nach Deutschland reisen will.
(I’m learning German because I want to travel to Germany.)
